Douglas-fir is used for structural applications that are required to withstand high loads. It has been used extensively in the construction industry for years.
Large-sized beams are inclined to develop surface cracks as they dry, but this does not reduce its strength. Almost all large beams in any species will split as they dry.
Douglas Fir can be used for roof trusses, framing, paneling, and glue laminated beams. It is also popular for light timber framing. The large dimensional beams are sought after for exposed interior posts and beams because of its stability and for the fact that it doesn't like to twist. Glue lamination to other species/products is also common.
